Featureworks

Laid by hand. Here for a hundred years.

Schist, riverstone, volcanic rock and Oamaru stone, laid into fireplaces, walls and paving by Tim Hanifin of Featureworks. Based in North Canterbury, working anywhere in New Zealand.

Most of what goes into a house is built to be replaced. The kitchen, the carpet, the paint. Stone isn't. A wall laid this summer will still be holding the garden up when your grandkids inherit the place.

The stone Tim works in

Schist

Flat, layered and full of gold and rust. It stacks into tight courses, which is why it's the go-to for fireplaces and walls that look like they've always been there.

Fireplaces, feature walls, retaining walls

Riverstone

Rounded and smoothed by years in the river. Soft greys that sit easily against a modern build or an old garden.

Garden walls, cladding, edging

Volcanic rock

Dark, heavy and full of texture. Bold on a feature wall and tough enough for anything outdoors.

Feature walls, outdoor fireplaces, landscaping

Brick and Oamaru stone

Traditional work: brick paths and chimneys, and creamy Oamaru limestone soft enough to carve. The stone behind the South Island's grand old buildings.

Paths, chimneys, heritage repair, carved features

Every stone gets turned over and read before it goes in.

No two are the same shape. That's the whole job.

Twenty-five years of knowing which one fits.

A finished schist wall with capping stones

Twenty-five years of walls like this.

Set out, footing down, string line pulled tight.

Every stone split, shaped and placed by hand.

Capped and finished. Ready for a hundred Canterbury winters.
